By this expedient '(continues to)" few actually suffer
"death, whilst dread and danger of it hang over
"the crimes of many. The tenderness of the law can not
"be taken advantage of. The life of the subject is spared,
" as far as the necessity of rational and intermidation
" permitts, yet not one will adventure upon the commission

in contradistinction to the infamy which would equally be
the portion of the malefactor, whither death were or were
