Precedents for requiring the sort of information, for the pro-
-curing -curement of which is the reason for including Letters of
Lodgings in the Licence system.

1. By the Land Tax Act of 1763, as printed in the Ruffheads
edition of the Statutes (4 G. 3. c. 4) s in s. 53 it is
thus provided - . . . . Every For the better discovery of
"personal estates intended to be charged by this Act, . . . . .
"every Householder . . . . shall upon demand of the Assessors
"of the respective Parishes . . . . give an account
"of the names and qualities of such persons
"as shall sojourn or lodge in their respective Houses,
"under the penality of . . . . five pounds . . . . " - Personal
Estates not being in practice charged to the Land tax, this
is consequently not enforced: but as it stands
in a statute of so late a date as the fourth of his
present Majesty's it probably has been repeated in
all subsequent ones.

2. By the first Servant's-Tax Act (17 G. 3. c. 39 s. 10) Masters
and Mistresses are to give in lists of their Servants with
thier employments, to the Assessors of Taxes, and on pain of
having the number arbitrarily assigned.

3. By 25 G. 3. c. 43 s. Householders are to give in lists
of their Lodgers keeping Servants or Inmates keeping Servants,
of Servants kept by their Inmates or Lodgers.
as well as of the Servants so kept, to the Assessors, Surveyors
"or Inspectors" within a week of their requisition in writing
left at the House, under penalty of L 10.

3. 4, 5. ,6. By subsequent Acts imposing duties on Carriages
Horses and Dogs, these duties and <add>Wearers of Hair Powder the obligation of [making
the above declaration] giving lists as above, is
extended to those several articles. Carriages & Horses, 25 G. 3.
c. 109 47. s. 10, 29: - Dogs, 36 G. 3. c. 124. s. 5: - Hair powder, 35. G. 3.
c. 49 s. 10, 21.

7. By the Alien Act 33. G. 3. c. 4. s. 22. Every Householder,
on requisition notice from a Justice &c is to give in an account,
declaring whether he has any Alien in his House, specifying
the "Name, Rank, Occupation" with length of residence in the
House. But it speaks only of the present Aliens resident at the time of the
delivery of such notice:
not the past time of any
time preceding the such delivery, of such requisition, notice and is thereby liable exposed to
evasion. Penalty, L 50 for every Alien not returned or for
neglect or refusal to not make return if there were an alien, in the House,
otherwise L 5.
