2 3 Dr Fordyce has not I believe made any experiments on this
subject lately: but this is the method he used,
as he tells me, to put in practice some years
ago. ]
He provided a Trough or large pan of water
considerably deep enough to hold a column of water higher <add> than the mixing-phial
to be employ'd. He filled the mixing phial with
the Metal and the Acid, and while the solution
<delis <Add> was going on, plunges placed the phial beneath the in the
pan or trough, so filled as that the
mouth of the mixing phial may be was underwater.
He then inverts the hold inverted a - Receiver
filled with Water over the mixing phial, so as
to catch the air as it is was generated. By In this
means there is way the Tube of communication is
left out, the water underneath which the
mixing phial is plunged answering the
purpose.
