Ld Pelham
prospect
of good
To think what Lord Pelham was — and then think
what he is has thus shewn himself is indeed a melancholy thought. To
say of him, as of an Emperor dignus regnus omnium
judico regnasit ought be too much. For nature
of the succeed to such a predecessor to follow
a King was indeed a rare advantage. The nature of the dominion situation considered — and what in any
situation would have been a blessing prize the benefit
of such a foil such comparison — the benefit advantage of such a foil
substituted to omnium might have made
the character nor inapplicable too strong a one. Beloved by every body his acquaintance <add>in the domestic circle</add>
not ill reputed out of it by many not ill of a man thus circumstanced treats in
less efficient or situation — of a man thus circumstanced might here and there
have legal suggested doubts suspicion, but had no where extinguished
hope. For a time there were those who said — men
neither unacquainted with Lord Pelham nor in
business. — Lord Pelham they said will not be idle
The Police is within his provision: there is work to do there
but too much: he will not shrink from it: his heart
nothing to it: and his head we trust will prove not not unequal sink under to it. One good earnest sign he has given already:
he has been struck with the disorder he
found reigning in the office: he fails at and is determined
to get the better of it. Alas! what is become
of all these smiling prospects. The Even
virtues which lasted for five years: the scarce
so many weeks had elapsed when the good disputions — the
virtues stock which Lord Pelham brought to office were found
to have evaporated.
