they like. For my own part, I have never lost sight of our
own country, in my wishes to see Mr. B's principles adopted
in Spain - it has always occurred to me, that this was the
surest way of rendering them useful at home. Indeed, I sh.d
feel truly mortified, if I imagined that we should not live
to see him estimated as he deserves in the United Kingdom.
I am glad to find that our opinion of the Spanish Constitutionalists
is in perfect unison. I fear, however, that we shall
differ somewhat in one respect.-as to their number. The new
code is certainly got up in a radical spirit, and, as you truly
observe, the Cortes have donde wonders, but I am very much
inclined to believe that they have been greatly stimulated by
the press and public opinion. You ask me what is Riego's
opinion? I am told by every body that he abhors all thoughts
of innovation, whether it be in the shape of an upper chamber
or otherwise, and I think his conduct throughout seems to justify my
belief... I have indeed, an excelsed notion of his character, and
can only repeat that his faults appear to me as of the most
pardonable kind. I am not acquainted with the affair of.
I suppose they are old friends independendent of political
considerations. Upon the whole, we have no right to be dissatisfied
with the Cortes, two more such sessions, and a little
public credit, would add greatly to the miracle of the revolution.
Under any other circumstances but those you mention, I
should be exceedingly gratified as the thought of our meeting here.
