MINUTES OF EVIDENCE BEFORE SELECT COMMITTEE
What is the amount of the fee upon a declaration?—It depends upon the length of the declaration.
Does it depend at all upon the amount of the sum sued for? —Not at all.
Merely upon the length of the declaration?—Yes.
How is that fee calculated?—It is calculated at so much per folio.
How much per folio?—Eight-pense per folio.
What is the next fee in the course of a cause?—If there is a plea by the de-
fendeant to the declaration, the same fee arises upon that : if there is a replication
to the plea by the plaintiff, the same fee arises upon that ; and so on throughout
the cause.
Then it is a fee of eight-pence a folio upon all pleadings on either side?—Yes.
Is there any other fee besides those upon a cause?—There is a fee upon signing
judgement, which is the final stage of the cause.
Does that depend upon the amount for which judgement is signed?—No, it
does not.
Is that always the same fee?—No, it is not always the same fee ; it varies
according to whether it is in debt or not.
Will you state what it is in all cases?—Our fees are received by our clerks ; but
I think it is about 7s. 4d.or8s. 4d. upon signing final judgement.
