§.4. Modes of agency applicable to the purpose of execution.

on the occasion and for the purpose in question with the
execution and effect given or not given to the claim in question,

This will depend of course partly u[on the state nature and quality / of
the agents, partly on the state and condition of the subject.
Neither operated upon. [but in a more particular manner
upon the nature and of the subject matter operated

As to the agents operating<add> they will in every case be either
persons or things or both: in so far as they are things, of
they will be things in the hands of persons.
As to the subject matter of operation, in so far as<lb/they come under the denomination of persons, the faculties operated
upon, the faculties to which the operation applies itself will<lb/<require to be considered and distinguished.
These will be the <add>purely physical faculties, in which
case the mode of operation will not be different from what it
is in the case of things; or the mental or say the psychological
faculties. In this latter case they will be either the simple intellectual or passive faculties
or the active faculties: and in so far as they are the active
faculties,
no otherwise can they be operated upon but through the
medium of sensation.
