Stamps, the pay not only ought to be, and must be, in the instance of every class, an
adequate recompense for the service, but actually
is, or the situation would not be accepted
and sought after, as we find it to be. But
1. In the most numerous class of Stamp-Officers, the tenth part
of a halfpenny as we have seen is the pay for each transaction: and
so much more numerous is greater is the number of transactions in
the instance of this lowest priced stamp than in
the instance of any or perhaps all other prices
put together, that if in the case of this class of Stamp Officers we suppose the value of
the money received in each transaction to amount
on an average to 4d, it will probably
supposition will probably be found a high one.
