There are two cases in which a man is
called upon to give the definition of a
word : 1st where the sense he gives to it
is new: 2dly Where the sense he finds
belonging to it is obscure

It may be obscure in either of two accounts ways.
1stBy being strange : 2dly by being :
In the first case, men do not
know not which of all the ideas that
they have belongs to it: they can not
pretend to think of giving it any one in
particular: they remain ignorant.

In the 2d case, they have not which of
two of three, to give to it: those ideas
being of him, of themselves <add>naturally</add> and contending a further affinity
by their common subjection to the same word
start up one for another: sometimes one, sometimes take up

with one, when the better of for the proper time
into which the word enters to be true, they
should have taken up the other: They
think they know, and do not: they are
worse than ignorant; they are mistaken
