Valve
I will give you a hint of a very faulty kind of valve
invented as far as I know by Dr Swede: it is applied by him to a cylinder
pipe of his invention.
The tube to be closed terminates in a cup: in this cup
plays a loose ball of lead turned exactly round to as to fit into
and when in a perpendicular rotation exactly close the tube, by its own gravity; much more when
propelled by any fluid: it is to prevent the return of the cylinder
when injected. He shew'd me one which he had got made
in Germany, & which answer'd the purpose exactly: but he faced
it was a difficult a thing to make them fit that a man might
make 18 or 20 before he could make one that would do.

Swede knows Priestly & L Shelburne — he has dined
2 or 3 times with L Sh. He was introduced by his friend Ingenhaus.
Swede knows not of any leather under the name you mention.
He has met with a kind of leather that is very thick & at the same
time very pliable manufactured at Liege. It was at Liege he met
with it. At Paris he saw a man who had a waistcoat &
breeches on that had all the appearance of leather but was
not leather. It was of a colour
Swede thinks that any leather whatsoever might be very
pliable by touching in oil after they it has been tanned with the astringent matter
which make it hard. That is the common process. The late Dr Maitland
gave
