... Barrow I will mention an indirect experiment that has
been made which may reduce to tend in a considerable
degree to reduce our apprehension of this ill
consequence.

The immeasurable abuses which had resulted from
the power exercised of seizing men's persons
upon a naked claim of debt to ever so small an amount in the first
instance, drew at length from the Legislature
that salutary Law by which this power was
restricted to fewer claims to the amount in the
higher Courts of £10, & upwards in the inferior, if 4 s,
& The demand <add>even then</add> in these cases to be verified authenticated by an Oath.

As this Oath, like other Oaths can be taken only
before certain persons authorised to receive them sitting in whose residence the nature of their function combined to a certain place viz: that part of the Theory done
called England,
