This conduct, and doctrines
With regard to this class of pleasures in particular, his conduct
and doctrines have nothing in of them of that particular
severity which those who have professed to eradicate
him have commonly in general thought themselves
bound to testify. Among those whom he admitted to
be most intimate share of his society was a woman
who made incontinence her profession. It no where appears
that her quitting this profession has made the
condition of her & being permitted to enjoy this favour.
Her occupation is occasionally mentioned as being there
what from the nature of things it will be every where
a disrespectable one, but no particular censure is any
where passed on her by Jesus himself on that account.
At her first introduction she is comforted with the general
assurance that her sins are forgiven have her. But
to sin [in the lot] we are often given in the to understand] is the loss
[all women as well as all men have sins]
of all mankind: nor is incontinence any more than any
other practice imputed to her as a sin.
With what ever aspect Jesus himself may be thought to might have
viewed these pleasures, it is certain that his
followers fell very early into notions of extreme rigour
