May 31. 1780</lb> May 30th 1. J.D. to J.B. in answer to questions
rather more ample than those sent
by S.B.

When Lord How commanded the American Squadron
He had occasion for the assistance of an experienced
Officer in the management of the general business of the
Fleet, and for the superintending of the detail of the many particular
Services, Captain Duncan was the person chosen
by his Lordship to officiate in this assistant capacity; and
that the title of his office might in some measure correspond
with the duties of it, he was called Adjutant
to the Commander in Chief. I do not know that the
exercising of the crews of the several Ships was ever
considered as part of his duty; nor do I recollect an
instance of his interfering in that business. All the
Captains in the Squadron had very ample instructions
from lord Howe respecting the discipline of their people;
and they made frequent reports to hid Lordship on
that subject.

1. Caution. 2. Unis. Harpsich? Characteristic ][ Uncharacteristic.

In the Bibl. Nav. omitted Author's name in No 7. of the Oct: V Duod.
which is — Duranti de Linoncourt.

Tramelli's plates of mechanical engines:
with explanations in Italian & French. there is
a fine copy of it at wade's for £4-4s-0d.

<p. Pringle's discourse and Capt. Cook's letters are the
means of preserving the health of Seamen. I
have got it for you at 1/2 price at Wate's.
viz: for 9d

For heaven's sake do give me an account
of what you have done with all the books letters &c
with which you were charged for Denmark & Sweden:
Wilson's, Fontana's & any others if there are were
any. Winslow the Dane was disappointed
at finding that his letter had not reached
its destination. It was not merely a letter of
introduction for you: it concerned business of
his own: he wishes still to have it forwarded ,
as I understand from Swede. No answer neither
about Mear's transcript that he wrote to me about.
