NONCON>Origin of — Ld Coke

The same Jurist, very well read in the Rolls
of Parliament, but very ill read in the great
Book of Human Nature, informs us upon the
authority of those Rolls, if not LdCoke some authors gravely tell us, that this view was
brought into England by the Lombards —
I had as lief have said, that the use of
women was brought in to by the Lombards.
as if the same nation which first taught
it to the people of one country, was not able
to teach it afterwards to that the people of another.

So strong is the madness for etymologizing
running round in that circle of etymology both for words & manners, that reasoners
like Ld Coke would fetch over institutions instruction
in in this mystery upon rafts from Florida or
Mexico, As Indian Britons come from Penguins Hudibrass if they did not hear by good luck
of its having been practised a little nearer

Note to these words of Ld Coke — "excess of Dirt" — one may
well conceive that according to the old proverb &
common experience, good should strengthen add strength to the
currentof the Passions, but I should never have thought
of its changing its questionable reading

Not but that it may be, that those who sit on
foot the petition which he quotesdeleted texthad seen
it practised by some Lombards.

The good people of this nation, like the good people
of any other nation are ready enough to com-pliment the neighbours, &particularly those
who stand lowest in their affections, with
the authorship of any custom or appearance
which they find incommodious. Thus ta certain discusswhich everyone knows
nowto have been im
ported by Columbus's
Spaniards from Amer-
ica, has made

Europe for it'sfather
we gave it to our
nation.
A nation add>country</add> which
gave birth to these swarms of Locusts, whose
depredations in spite of consumingtheyquestionable reading
have for so many centuries.

Tho' this nauseous plant languished, & probably ever will
languish in this our soil, yet there are testimonies
enough in deleted texttheirLaws+ <note>+Si quis velit cum uxore unfitlic UNFITLICE coire If any one attempts to have to do with his wife in an unfit manner &their HistoryShip lost visionaryM Paris.</note>
