Police Report 16 July 1798

It having been
observed by this
Committee that
although in the
Act of 7th July
1794 for the purchase
of ground
for the intended
Penitentiary House
the usual compulsory
powers
are included created,
and the
spot at Battersea
then specially included
therein,
yet neither that
nor any other
spot has been purchased
under the
said Act

And it having
been moreover
observed that
in the Treasury
Letter to this Committee
of the
15th instant signed
by Mr Secretary
Ling no answer
is given to so
much of the
Committee, Order of the
3 to which the
same purports
to be a return
as to the time
within which
the difficulties
in question seemed
likely to be
removed

Ordered And it having
been moreover
observed that
although in
the opinion of
the Attorney and
Solicitor General
dated 5 March
last and referred
to in the said
Letter the case
in question is
mentioned as
one in which
certain Orders
of the House
of Commons
therein mentioned
might perhaps
be dispensed
with for the carrying
of the measure
in question into effect,
no application
f to the House
for that purpose
appears
to have been
made

That a statement Return
be forthwith
before made forthwith to
this Committee
from
the Treasury,
by [ ] next stating whether
it be the intention
of the
Board that
the Bill so reported
upon
by the Attorney
and Solicitor
General shall
be offered to
Parliament
at the commencement
of the
next Session
or at any and
what other future
time - [+] [+] and whether for
that purpose it be
the intention of the
Board that the previous
steps requisite in
the case of
Bills should be
taken at the
next period
for the taking
of the same

and whether
the said Bill
contains the
usual compulsive
powers,
and whether if
any such powers
should be granted
by Parliament
for the purpose in question it be the intention
of the
Treasury to execute
such powers

should not
think fit to
grant such
fresh powers
whether in that
case it would be
the intention
of the Treasury
to make use
of the compulsive
powers
already created
by the said Act
of 1794, or
if not, by what
other means it
would be the
intention of the
Treasury to

obey the requisitions
in the
said Act contained.
