True Bastille Preface
Not only was The end in view gave its character
and complexion to the means: It was because the end
was oppression was not fit to be avowed that the course means
taken for the accomplishment of it was then employed to compass it were illegal: it was because the
end in view effect meant to be produced was contrary to natural justice, that the
means chosen employed in the production of it were contrary to law.+
The transgression was therefore not of that blameless kind
which arises from simple misconception, but of that
criminal and in case of inferior delinquents punishable
kind which it accompanied with criminal consci what lawyers call mala fides
that kind of consciousness which on the part of all those
who are not above law is deemed criminal, and
gives to the act to which it accompanies/attaches and taints acts accompanied by it the denomination and consequences of a crime.
