When was it that the passion for Juries took
its rise? At the time when Judges were not only
the creations of the Crown, as now, but the absolute
slaves of the Crown, being removeable at pleasure. Reasons grow fainter and fainter, weaker or die dwindle or vanish altogether:
but the popular affections that were grounded in them
take root in habit and prejudice and live for ever.
