Punishment analysed into its various hosible Modes.
By applications of the moral or mental kind. I mean such
as act upon his will, causing him to further doing that from
which ( by the supposition ) he is restrained. Where restrictive by
misstatement is this applied, its the party himself we see
who, by forbearing, to do that, the doing of which could be
a pleasure to him is the immediate author of his own pain.
Now then what matinee is there that can prompt him to become
so? There are but two: the hope of more than equivalent pleas
sure ; or the fear of greater pain. As to pleasure that is out of
the question : for were that the motive the effect would not be of the work
punishment. The motive therefore can be no other that then fear
of greater pain. Their greater pain (which may be called the sub
subsidiary punishmentt) cannot be another punishment of [the
restrictive days] this produced, at least the ultimate link in such
a chain of punishments can never be a punishment [of this days]
thus produced, since one of this days that produced, can
never have any effect at all, unless a greater be beyond it.
For the same reason (as we shall see in its proper place) neither
can it be taken from the days active punishments : if taken
therefore
