Lante June 14th.
To the Philosopher of I.S.P.
My dear Sir,
You will have seen Col. S. 'ere this comes to hand and he will
have given you an account of men and things in Greece. By what he has said
and what I have written, you will have easily perceived that we are
completely at issue, more especially with respect to my most excellent and
illustrious Prince Mavrocordato. I have already sent him quite enough of
the Prince's own writing to render any farther justificatory remarks of mine
perfectly needless. I told the Colonel he had totally mistaken the character
of M, and I repent it, if the Col. thinks he has done M. an injury, I trust
no time will be lost in repairing it by such concessions as one man owes it to
another. But the principal object of this hasty account is to accompany
the letter of M. which I thought was sent under cover to O. & L. but which was
omitted to be given to me when I was leaving Missolunghi by a mistake. This
document speaks for itself and will, I trust satisfy you that M. is worthy of the
part assigned to him in your code. As to the letters you intended for him, and
which it was left to Col. S. to give or with hold at his pleasure, I find by a
letter received recd. two days ago that they have been received so that I
suppose the Colonel sent them by an individual whom he has despatched
from this place before he embarked on board the Florida. If I has so
many other causes of complaint against the Colonel for his disingenuousness
on various other points, I should make this a charge and say he was not
authorized to send these letters thro' any other channel, when he knew I
was on the point of going over to join the Prince at Missolunghi —
