species of torture was practised upon the

I would be useless Not to follow so painful a
subject into all its details.- How variously
however the causes may be diversified organic there
is one thing pain results from them all - These
different kinds of punishment may however
differ greatly in the degrees of their intensity
and the greater or less importance of their
consequences.-
These consequences may be
arranged under three heads. 1. consists In
the confirmation of the organic pain beyond the
time appointed for the infliction of the punishments
2 In the different physical evils of other kinds
which may follow the infliction of the punishment
3 If the degree of Ignominy which is attached to it, In
the choice of punishment all these considerations
are of great importance
