Punishment distinguished & defined.
IWe shall not here plunge deep into Metaphysics. IWe shall Design of the
chapter
draw from that source no more than what appears to be is absolutely necessary,
to enable us to obtain to afford a clear apprehension of the subject we
are treating of. That subject is punishment. It is necessary
then we should understand clearly what punishment is.
For this purpose we must be able to distinguish it from
any of those objects with which it is in any danger of
being confounded. Let us first learn thus to distinguish It is necessary also that we should
comprehend the different shapes in which it may appear it: we shall then be in a condition to define it.

Punishment is an evil.Pain. But it is not in every case Punishment depends
upon the Intention
that a Pain evil is Punishment. It is not every act whereby pain evil
is produced that is an Act of Punishment. Whether a painan evil
can be properly termed a Punishment or no will depend
in a good measure upon the Intention of him from whom
it issues.
