J.B. to Mora
the light I find is in the sum of 25,000 reals — stated
as being (I suppose that sum paid yearly) — as the allowance
made, as supposed, by the French government
to a Morning-paper- the Universal I thing they call it.
But the Constitutional? — What is the additional sum
deemed requisite for that paper at the onset — and how long would that sum
would last? In my last, I stated one to a hundred as the
chance in favour of my being able to cause to drop
from the clouds the money necessary: I can still
venture to set down the chance as equally favourable.
Could I have known the sum necessary, I
might perhaps, have stated the odds as not quite so
great. But still the sum is known, more than this
I do not see how it is possible for any body to say. It
grieves me to think that a month at least must elapse
before a satisfactory answer to this indispensable
question can be received. Although this will
have to go by post, Mr de Colomb was obliging enough

to consent very readily to take charge of it: and this, I

believe, before I had inforemd him of the exigency of the

case— I mean the danger of the stoppage of any letter
sent to you through the ordinary channel. Mr Blaquiere,
in his letter, mentioned as a fact that all the members
of the Cortes were to continue at Madrid till the resumption
of the sittings: when with M. de Colomb,
I took the opportunity of a mentioning this as a report,
and asking him whether it was true: he answered very
readily —Yes— that it was true in the main; for
that two thirds or three fourths of the deputies, I
do not for certain remember the number, but I
think it was three fouths, were to remain; and
that those three fourths were to be elected by the
president, and that Mr Callatrava was that president.
All this comforted me not a little.
