At my first interview I believe it was with
Dn. Rocha, something dropped from him about a proposed correspondence
on my part, with some public man or other at
Lisbon, mentioning, I believe, though without designation of
names, some Member or other of the Cortes. The tendency of my
answer was, I believe, rather declinatory: not but that, supposing
myself sufficiently at liberty, it would be perhaps the most interesting
correspondence I could have, but that, the Corresponence
between Lisbon and London being already in his hands, it did not appear to me how, on this side of the water,
