Add any board of merit on the part of men causes of no merit.
5. 3. Irritability — Sympathy and antipathy are more strongly created by the idea of determinate individuals than by do of indeterminate do: and by do of smaller groups than of larger ones. Presented by relevant arguments persons are prevented on the largest and most indeterminate groupes,

Relevant arguments being drawn in some most instances if from the consideration of persons, from the consideration of persons taken in large and miscellaneously composed groupes, but also frequently not from the consideration of persons even thus vaguely designated, but from the mere nature of things, take comparatively speaking no hold upon the passions. Personalities, the particular class of fallacies here in question operate upon the passions with a peculiar degree of force. They present frequently most commonly to sympathy an object of that pleasing emotion affection: they present constantly an object to the opposite and though less pleasing yet not the less strong and interesting object affection of antipathy. They present in the present case in the persons of those who in a complaisant way would be principally affected by the reforming measure, persons to objects to be attached to, to regard with affection, to defend, and to protect and to whom defence and protection the meanest individual may flatter himself with the hope of being in some way or other contributory in the persons of those the supporters of the supposed fit objects of aversion and disesteem: of aversion capable of rising to hatred hatred, of disesteem capable of swelling into contempt
