One circumstance will ere long have of itself the effect
of placing the importance of this Guatemala in its true
point of view in all eyes. It is through Lake Nicaragua
if any where that the Juncture of the Pacific and the
Atlantic will take place if any where to any with any considerable
advantage. This is become a settled point. Such is
was the expressed by Baron Humboldt in his published
works and my intimacy with him has afforded
me the occasion to know that the matter is considered by
him as out of dispute: both in regard to importance and
facilities. Both at Paris and and just at present here the French
has been busying themselves with me on the subject on one pretence
or another. A year and a half ago I became the
unconscious initiant of mischief by giving letters given to
the Govern let two men who turned out to be secret secret
Agents of government and at the same time very worthless
characters.
For civil engineering and for fortification, with
