to give at his own pleasure, on any occasion and
for any purpose at pleasure determination to the will of God.

When an oath has
any effect it is from
fear of some one two
or all the 3 lots of punishment
1. at the hands
of the Almighty 2 at the
hands of the law 3 at the
hands of public opinion
It is clear that in the character case/instance of a against
all persons entertaining any of these opinions just mentioned, in the
character of a security against falshood the ceremony taken by itself can
possibly have any effect and that character in so far as
in a consequence of the ceremony any such effect is produced, the
cause by which it is produced is — not the ceremony itself
be not the of punishment for the act which is or
of the ceremony — but the fear of punishment no three
destroyed better the three distinguishable lots of punishment
some one, so all of them to wit punishment at the hands of
the Almighty, punishment at the hands of the law, and punishment
at the hands of public opinion.
