Beginning
Virtue and Vice the reference of pain and pleasure
Yourself, Reader, and all others: these are
Subject matter of the present consideration are yourself
and all others
Objects of consideration and endeavour your greatest happiness
and that of all others.
Subject matters of every mans consideration are
himself and all others
Object Himself and all other beings — these are the subject
matters of the most expec. The all-comprehensive
intelligence
His own happiness and that of all other beings
who have feelings — those are objects subjects of consideration and
objects of endeavour — to the most expansive — to all-comprehensive
benevolence
Happiness consists of such is in proportion to
the aggregate of pleasures, and exemption from pains
Virtue is that which contributes to happiness — to
maximization of the aggregate of pleasures — to minimization of
the aggregate of pains. Vice, that which contributes to unhappiness
— to minimization of the aggregate of pleasure — to maximization
of the aggregate of pain
Such your own happiness in the first place; says
nature to every man human being as to any other sensitive being.
Such your own the happiness of others in the next
place — such your own happiness through the nurture of the
of others. Say with conjoint voices — extra-regarding Prudence
— and Effective benevolence
Prudence and effective benevolence. Under these one
or other of these two heads may be ranked whatsoever b
and is justly entitled to the name of Virtue
