1 ADULTERY — Of Wife why disgraceful to the. Husband

It is a common affectation among popular Moralists
to treat it as an explicable problem,
why it is that the infidelity of the Wife should
reflects is apt to reflect <add>when detected</add> commonly a degree of disgrace
upon the injured Husband when the Gallant, at least in certain countries & in a certain rank , even rears his head the higher. : as if the custom propensity to regard
the matter in that light were a mere
caprice, which bore no analogy to the general
tenor of human sentiments , nor had any connection
with the general principles of Human
Nature was inexplicable upon the General Theory of Human nature — It is however easily enough accounted
for by one who chuwishes chuses to survey a
subject impartially on both sides , without
permitting himself that license which is assumed
by the herd of reasoners their many of wha eyes against
what may be alledged in favor of what is or
passes for illaudable , & of combating vice
as it were with poisoned weapons.

imagin ation a Cause carries to a reason, thusly
led to their studying to represent it as without
a cause, they present shut out that light which

the method means, of, which that knowledge would afford
of combating it with advantage. — a conduct
this, which resembles that of those the vulgar, who
when a brood of noxious insects visits the earth
th instead of applying themselves to the investigation
of its nature and its origination instead of setting themselves down calmly to studying of its history & its properties in order to Devise what methods may
be discovered for destroying it, join together in
regarding it as an inexplicable & inevitable
instrument of vengeance in the hand of Heaven.

The circumstances which may lead a woman
into this guilt are reducible to these following
