40 C Of Falshoods in general
Various shapes in which this species of falshood shews itself This species of falshood is seen not uncommonly to
manifest itself in most of the shapes which falshood
can assume. Sometimes it in the shape of ordinary simple
falshood; in which case it comes under the notion of that
sort of practise which is commonly called puffing.(a)
Under To this attached head come belong the false attestations
which are but too frequently published exhibited in
the public points: [+] [+] bearing witness to the extraordinary skill of such or such an operater, or the extraordinary excellence of the wares of such or such a trader. To this species of falshood the
medical profession is more particularly obnoxious. Sometimes
the names of the attestors are forged: and sometimes
the sanction of an oath is profaned in order to
give additional credit to the imposture. (b)
Characteristic punishment of the puffer's throne. In this case the characteristic quality ought
of the ignominious part of the punishment might be
enhanced by an additional ceremony, which might

(a) <add>The</add> Falshood indeed is not a constant ingredient in the
idea annexed to this expression. It is sometimes applied
to the mere language of vanity; which without
advancing into the pale of falshood, makes such an affected
display of the truth, as is disgusting to the hearer.
