Of Falshoods in general
Punishments requisite in addition to the characteristic ones, omitted — why So much with regard to the characteristic
punishment of the above offences in as far as the
falshood is concerned. As to what other articles may
be wanting in order to make up the requisite
dose of punishment, it would be to little purpose
to dwell upon them. This is a title which from
the locality of many of the offences comprized under
A, can not be so far compleated as to be exhibited
in terminis. For the purpose of general instructions
the general principles laid down with respect to the quantity
& quality of punishments, together with the particular limits
that have been given in this chapter will probably
be thought sufficient.
Falshoods subservient to public offences omitted — why. With regard to such of the offences against the
state as are not committ commissible no otherwise than but by
falshood as are of the class of public ones these (as has been already intimated) on
account of the locality of their nature can not here be
particularly examined here provided for:
Artifice of Legislation in raising any offences against trade and the revenue &c to the rank of Forgery and Perjury It may afford some instruction
however just to point out on this occasion
a contrivance which legislators seem to have hit upon
as it were by instinct in order to give a greater degree
