[(A) Individual] Individuality of a person, how determined. The individuality of every person is best
described most decisively determined by the circumstance of his birth: to wit
by his having been born of such a woman [
such a place and] at such a time. The
proof is grounded on this axiom that no two objects
persons or other objects can be at the same spot occupy the a given very self-same
portion of space at the very self-same time. The circumstance
of being born of the same woman would
not be sufficient of itself: for that by that two brothers could not be distinguished.
The same circumstance of being born of
such a woman at such a place could not be sufficient:
for two brothers may by possibility have
been born exactly at the same place. But two
brothers though twins cannot have been born exactly
at the same time: that is at the same instant It can The individuality
can not be determined solely by appearance: for that
in every person changes altogether in a course of
years: and at the same time two persons even standing together may
be so alike as scarcely to be distinguishable. This
has been the case of with twins.
