Of Perjury
formed is any act at large, (which is not an act of narration) and that to be performed
commonly at a distance of time. It is properly an
oath when the act of any, which is undertaken to be performed is
the particular sort of act that may be stiled an act
of narration, and that commonly to be performed commonly immediately
after the act is taken.
What remains farther to be remarked concerning
oaths, as referred to that the title Of Oaths in the Book of
Procedure.
NOTE
other than an act of the person himself who asserts: are a
fact passing in his mind is that being the only kind of fact
he can be absolutely sure of; or can [really] therefore properly speaking make known
A man may be sure of his own perceptions of his own belief or of his own will
and that without the possibility of being mistaken: but that
is all of which his assurance can be thus profit. In
every thing else he may be deceived. Macbeth + + Shakespeare's tragedy of Macbeth when he
grasped at the imaginary dagger could be perfectly sure of thus much
that he had the image of a dagger as existing in a certain hanging just before
place his eyes present to his mind: for so much according to the
story, was true: but he could not be equally sure that of the external fact
of there being a dagger in that place: for that fact was not true.
