Offences against Condition — Adultery Reasons

First then with regard to the private mischief.

Mischiefs it is apt to produce to individuals This species of property may be by much the most valuable
part of the property a man possesses. On the other
hand, it may also be by much the least valuable:
it may become worth less than nothing, by the burthens
with which it is charged with, and by the impossibility
of getting rid of those burthens. However Moreover
when it is of most value, the nature of this offence
is not to deprive him of the property, but
only to impair the value of it render it of less value than it was before.
As to the loss in point of value the amount of
it is liable to infinite variation: It depends in a great degree upon the mental sensibility and thereby upon the taste, moral sentiments, rank, education & nature of the injured husband. but it is very
frequently so great as to constitute the offence
a very cruel injury.

The following are in a gross point the mischief
general heads of mischief to which it may expose
him: as to the particular mischief that may result
from each of these general heads respectively they are
contingent indeed but they are infinite.

1.st Mischief. Loss of the wife's affection 1. It will scarce ever happen that a woman
proves unfaithful to her husband in this way
but she it will diminish more or less his affection
for his person. It will therefore diminish
in the same degree there such of his pleasures
as depend upon that affection. If he were not
before already become indifferent, he would will be render'd
indifferent to her by that event, and if he were
already indifferent he would be render'd worse than
indifferent after her intrigue with another man by the comparisons she will have
learnt to make to his disadvantage. When a woman
