Of Simple Mercantile Defraudment

Now and then indeed it does happen that a responsible
person engages in those mean offences, but in such case
he is so degraded in the eye of the world, as to be reduced in
point of estimation to a level with those who have indigence
to plead for their excuse: if therefore he were to be
exempted from sharing the same degree of legal infamy, it
would probably be looked upon by the people as an improper
partiality shewn to opulence. Infamous punishment
may therefore be made a constant ingredient in the punishment
for such offences of this stamp, without any inconvenience
worth regarding. With
