Police Report 1

In their Report on the subject of the
Hackney Coach Office (being their 11th Report
of the last Year) and in their Report
on the subject of the Hackney and Pedlars
Office (being their 10th Report of the that same
Year) Your Committee represented the expenses
of these offices as being in their opinion
susceptible of considerable reduction -
proposing at the same time for the choice
of the House, a variety of three different measures or expedients
as being capable, any one of them,
of contributing to that effect.

In the instance of the Hackney Coach
office, in which functions of a judicial nature
are added to the business authority of granting
licences an alternative suggestion suggested was to
abandon relinquish those functions altogether to the Magistrates
who at present exercise a concurrent jurisdiction
over the same field, and as to the
business of the licences to transferr it to the
Stamp Office.

In like manner, in In regard to the Hawkers and Pedlars
Office to which Office, of which the business is confined to licencing,no judicial functions being
subjected to it, a correspondent suggestion was
to transferr this business likewise to the Stamp
Office; as the a transfer that might (it was
thought) be made in both cases with no without any other
addition to the official establishment of the Stamp
Office, other than the transferr of a Clerk or two
from each of the Offices proposed to be suppressed.
