13) Personal Injuries. Aggravat.g circumstances.
Mischiefs of Disfigurement. look upon it as a misfortune , the pains of the wounds
out of the question , to have his nose slit , his
ears cut off , or his face cover'd over with scars.
Tis in the estimation of persons of the opposite sex,
that for obvious reasons a person is most exposed
to suffer in consequence of a misfortune of this kind.
I would not deny but that there are certain cases in which the manner in which a
man came to undergo it may do more have the effect of
giving precuring him a greater portion of good will than the
misfortune itself may occasion he a manner of his losing.
It is in this way that a wound received in the defence of
or mistress has given gained him a higher place than ever in her affections :
and in general it is in this way that the honourable
scars of a scar received in his country's cause , has
more than compensated rewarded many a soldier for the loss
of beauty . But whether this shall be the case or
no depends upon the prevalence of sentiment we
lack in the persons whose goodwill is in question .
And as no man can be sure before hand of this
prevalence [+], hence every man in case of such a misfortune is exposed at all
events to a pain of [apprehension .] the apprehensive
kind. [ ]
Of the mischiefs of mutilation no separate aestimation account
need be taken need be made . Mutilation being disfigurement
added to disablement , the mischief of the former are
the sum a combination of the mischiefs of the two latter .
