Punishment analysed into various possible modes.
Having fixed this idea of punishment in general, and shown how to distinguish it from the several,objects with which it was liable to be confounded, we now come to give a view of the several possible modes or kinds into which it may itself be distinguished. Punishment is evil. Evil is either pain or loss of pleasure. We may even narrow the idea of punishment within the import of the word Pain; since mere loss of pleasure unaccompanied with actual pain could never answer any end that was ever preposed by Punishment. Punishment then is pain: but pain itself is either of that sort which springs up originally or of that which is grounded on the loss of pleasure. This consideration one should think at first sight and upon viewing the subject a ? should furnish a natural distribution for the several kinds of punishment.
