C 33 Punishment analysed into its various possible Modes. form, however,so as many different ? of punishments. Those which consist in the infliction of self respecting pains may be entitled punishments in propriam personam,to distinguish them from those which consist in the inflicting of social or dissocial pains, which may be entitled punishments in alienam personam.
Punishments in propriam personam affect the condition. 1, Of the person of the party, 2nd of ⧼toolbar-peri-addition⧽ or other objects at large.⧼toolbar-peri-note⧽
To proceed go on then with such punishments as consist in the infliction of self respecting pains. The objects or instruments which are means of a man's experiencing pain or pleasure, are either 1. His person, or 2. Other objects at large which with references to his person may be stiled external objects.
An incident then by which a man may be subjected to pain must be either 1. A change in the condition of the person himself; or 2 A change in the condition he was in of being able to reap pleasures of security or chances a means of either advantages from particular external objects.
Under the term advantage we may include either pleasure, or security, or a chance, or, in short, a means of either.
A punishment subjecting a man to pain by the first of these methods may be termed a personal ⧼toolbar-peri-addition⧽ a punishment. As
