tendency of any cause, you are to take account
of the good effect only and to leave out the bad.

true : but one main ingredient in
the perfection of an instrument is the not being
liable to be misapplied. Drugs which are most
efficacious in the way of medicine are apt to
often convertible into poisons : true : but those which
are dangerous are never so useful upon the whole
as those, if such there are, which being equally serviceable are more
safe. Mercury and opium are useful articles :
poisons they may be made to be when ill applied: true but bread and water are more useful still.
