Radicalism not dangerous

2 ulto
III Experience
II Ireland

2 §.1. Analogy between the causes

3
So in Ireland, time
sufficient for experiment
democratic ascendency
maintained by the effect
of rad. reform. Good
effects, p negative and
positive the same.

In the case of Ireland, we shall see a case exactly still more closely in
point — for a length of time quite sufficient for experiment —
quite sufficient for the support of every inference — we shall see democratic ascendency
democratic ascendency established and maintaining itself: maintaining itself — not indeed by the under
the name of parliamentary reform — radical parliamentary reform — but by the effectual <gap/
but, what is more, with the essential characters of it. So much for the cause of the effects enquired
after: as to the effects themselves, they will be found still in their nature effects against the ,
the same as in the case of the United States: the same in the nature
— subversion of the rights of property, none; subversion
of the Constitution none. Thus much for the merely negative effects: [+] [+] as touching these
negative effects, we
shall find the case
of Ireland merely
equal to that of the
United States, since
beyond compleat negation<lb?>there is nothing.

for the negative or positive Look now to the positive effects here on the side of Ireland we shall
find a brilliant superiority:
the C aggregate mass of felicity
exalted to a pitch <gap/. unknown before or since:
public fel and private felicity, and as at once a cause and
consequence of it, public and private virtue.

4
Negative good effect
none — subversion of the
Constitution — peculiar
to Ireland. In U.S.
matchless, mixt Constitution
was subverted
Democracy substituted
Consequence, see above
Of English institutions
the good bad dropped
off, the good stuck
on — more vigorous
than in England.
