Indirect Legislation

Satisfying

The practise of the obsetric art by men
has been the object of public and vehement
complaints. It seems however not to be as yet
very prevalent as yet, except among the higher
classes where the anxiety is alaways great, or amongst
the lower classes occasionally in extraordinary cases where the danger
is imminent. I exclude the interference on It
is on account of the latter cases [from which
it is impossible that the latter former should be distinguished discriminated
by any form of words] that it would be dangerous
to exclude put a legal exclusion upon
[the assistance of] male assistance the male sex men , at least while
things continued as at present till institutions
were formed for putting equal opportunities of giving a suitable education to
instruction in the way of the other sex. (a)

(a) In our East Indian conquests where a
woman of any condition must not be so much
as looked at by a man, an institution for the
education of female physicians practioners in every branch of physic would be of the highest
use. Even in Spain and Naples there might be a convenience
in their having women regularly bred to this vocation. But
they must begin by having men.
