J. B. to Baron De Leffert 2
Though in all points perfectly honourable and spotless in his benevolent reputation? generous yet not prodigal
there is a good deal of the Irish enthusiasm, and
perhaps a little more than can a little more than many too much of the Irish competuosity and eccentricity in his turn
of mind. Not long after the publication of the above that work
he found reason — I forget how it happened — to break the talisman
which closes the doors of the hermitage from which I
write. Amongst his eccentricities was that of striking into
that work history of our of his voyages an enthusiastic passage
or two about the delights of codification coupled with the mention of a name so little worth it is that which began this already too long letter. In the course
of a year or two he partook several times of the such potatoes
and which as the hermitage affords. How it happened
I could not guess — for some years I had neither
seen nor heard any thing of him, when at the time when I received
a letter from him dated at Southampton written when at the
point of embarkation on a visit to Spain, with two
declared objects: one of which them was the making my cr
mer have giving in that country what celebrity notoriety he
could to my works — the other not mentioned since explained, but which
has never turned out to be the writing a history of the revolution,
the wars of which had just arrived here. Unbidden
not only imposed, but unasked by me, or any ,
he has been writing me for me with as much
zeal as the highest-paid Ambassador could manifest
in the service of his monarch: and to that zeal I am
indebted for that return from the Cortes of which I am
not very correct accounts I believe have
found their way into some of your well-disciplined
and well-purified newspapers. He continues full of gratitude
for all the service he has done me.
