1. As to consistency, the assigned cause is upon
the face of it utterly incapable of producing the
reported numerical effect. At the time in question,
no man's salary (says the story) would pay for his boots and shoes:
half the amount is added to it; and now it is enough
for every thing. Absence of exact truth is therefore
matter of absolute certainty; an of any approach to
truth, there is no evidence.
