Emancipation Preface
The question was and is a mere question
of Arithmetic: on that ground I was then, on that
ground I am still, prepared to argue it. In those
days I was incidentally in contact with Ministers;
more frequently and nearly with some intimate and
confidential friends of Ministers: of some even who not
only did then profess but even now with tyranny and
persecution not only in their hearts, but on their lips
scrupled not to profess themselves to be on every occasion
guided by the dictates of conscience: and the conscience
not one of ordinary mould but a doubly and trebly
refined religious and sanctimonious conscience,
The Tract was read. Do you see any flaw in it?
Is there any thing which in the shape of an objection
has presented itself to your view? Vague generalities such
as were and are in readiness for all occasions compose
the answer: of an objection not so much as the
shadow could be found. By preaching against the
Trade in Slaves no small quantity of popularity was
capable of being made: no small quantity of popularity
