The state of things
in question very detrimental

Be this as it may, a sate of things in which
even on the score of the very injury contempt
attaches itself to the injurer howsoever guilty
to the sufferer, howsoever completely innocent,
and attrociously injured, and whether possessed
or not a chance of defending himself and
averting the injury, is a state of things
unquestionably detrimental to general
happiness.
