Evidence
Reader, if any spark of real genuine humanity be still glowing
in thy bosom, if all sympathy for human misery wretchedness suffering be not extinguished
by sinister interest of the ice of age, give thanks to
the authors of language for this word factitious. There is a cordial
at the bottom of it. If all that wretchedness of which
the poison is the constant and almost every human bosom the occasional theatre – if all that misery of which the man of law
is the instrument, were the work of Nature, uncontroulable and inexorable omnipotent and uncontroulable
Nature, complaint would be useless unavailing, murmuring in
aggravation exasperation of the disease, patience and resignation the only remedy. But if so
great a portion part as will be brought to view marked out be the work of
art and human labour under the direction of human art, take careful, gentle Reader: that which
human labour heaped together, human labour may remove.
