By the very nature of man, of two interests both
of them present at the same time present to the mind
in their line amount and value the strongest is that which on every occasion constantly predominates
– that by which on every occasion conduct
is determined. Thus both being equally certain
a gain of four pound from the same source will be sure to be preferred
to a gain of two pound: a loss of two pound to a
loss of four pound.

For the same reason, a gain of two pound
the whole of which comes into his own pocket will
be preferred to a gain of two pound in which all the
which members of the community to which he
belongs will have shares equal to his own: so as
also will a gain of two pound in which a smaller
part of of the whole number of the members of the
community will have to share with him.
