§. 6. Limits to compleat success. II Foreign Forgeries. —
29
2
How the pre-existing
Stock might be called in

characteristic marks, might accordingly be advertised, accompanied by
an intimation that all numbers not comprized in such list cannot
but be spurious: and in this state of things it might perhaps be
not inconsistent with the credit of the Company (proper powers being obtained
from Parliament for the purpose) to fix a day, after which payment
of such specified numbers should either be altogether refused, or not
made but upon personal examination submitted to, or collateral security
given, or other such burthensome and inconvenient terms. —

In regard to any class of Notes thus meant to be discountenanced,
warning might also be given in the way of advice, recommending
it to individuals not to receive any Note of such a class without first
applying to the Bank to be informed whether any genuine Note bearing
the No of that Note be in effect outstanding, and whether the
dates and signatures to it be correct. —
