London Petition for Judicial Reform and against Lord Eldon
When remuneration for
official service is so
managed and applied
that the quantity of
it receives encrease
as the misery of the
people receives encrease
what well grounded
confidence respect
can men have feel for a
government by which
such a state of things
is has been organized created and
is preserved?
When private interest
is thus placed in a state
of an unrelenting hostility
to public duty
and the substance of
of the people wrung from
them by taxes under
the name of fees, or employed
by their rulers
in suborning in subordination of
to the in securing
their concurrence in
acts which differ in
nothing but by their magnitude and an impunity
from the most flagrant
crimes
by which human suffering
is produced upon the
largest scale.

respect and confidence
in government thus conducting
itself becomes in the
eyes of all men in
whose thought is inserted
a feeling at once an object of contempt
and his abhorrence
of contempt for the sordidness meanness
