1824 Aug. 12 Greece J.B. to Dr Corry Gares
It is not without regret that I can think of the minuteness of the detail, into which this Election Code runs, and the difference between the state of society which it supposes, and that which has place in Greece. I depend upon you If your policeman carries you through with it, I depend upon you for some words of advice from you to your country men, pointing out in what particulars, if in any, it may with advantage be made applicable to their case
The As to the Notes, these you will see, could not in the main have been calculated for the of any other country other than England: for illustration you will do with them as you please: adding a translation, of such of them, if any, and but such of them only as afford a promise of being of use.
Unfortunately Bowring at this moment is at a distance from London: therefore I can neither get from him your letter to him, nor settle with him the course to be taken for secure payment to the Printer for the printing and paper of the work. Translators I understand you have two in view. As to remuneration for them I must beg leave to cast myself upon you for information and advice. Two cases there are in either of which adequate remuneration will be necessary: One is if, in their view, the use, if any, of which the work appears to afford a promise to your country, is not sufficient to pay them for their labour: the other is — if their pecuniary circumstances are not such, as to admitt of their bestowing upon the work, gratis, the requisite portion of their time
